The main publication of the Society for Song, Yuan, and Conquest Dynasties Studies is The Journal of Song-Yuan Studies. Go to the JSYS Archive section for more information about the current and past issues of the journal.
The Society for Song, Yuan, and Conquest Dynasties Studies is pleased to offer a supplementary publication available here as a PDF file: Valerie Hansen’s The Beijing Qingming Scroll and its Significance for the Study of Chinese History. Originally published in 1996, The Beijing Qingming Scroll consists of a series of black-and-white reproductions from the original Qingming shanghe tu 清明上河圖 attributed to the Northern Song court painter Zhang Zeduan 張擇端 and held in the Palace Museum, Beijing. Because the handscroll shows the architecture, clothing, shops, boats, and vehicles in a twelfth-century city, it gives a vivid sense of daily life. Details of the painting are here reproduced in a booklet containing twenty-six separate images, each with a detailed caption explaining its contents. The booklet also includes an introduction summarizing what is known of Zhang Zeduan, as well as brief history of the painting and a list of recommended readings.
